It may not be traditional berbere but my guests couldn't tell the difference.I’ve only used it once, but I’m happy to have this spice in hand since it is not available in my townA very good tasting blend with 12 ingredients. If you want more heat just add cayenne.Smells wonderful and tastes great with the the right amount of kick. I do add a little pink salt sometimes but it depends on what I'm cooking. The 1 pound bag is the way to go as it will keep in the dark cupboard a very long time. Wish it was ziploc but I fold over the top and tape it shut. Try it if you like Ethiopian dishes, or sprinkle it on green beans or fries for a little something special! While this Frontier version of Berbere is not a traditional berbere spice blend, it's a very good starter spice (seller should use authentic Ethiopian cumin & bishops weed). I use Frontier's berbere as a starter, from which I add a bit more fenugreek, cardamom, my homemade ground dried shallots and hot chili pepper (we like it hotter), a little bit of smoked paprika and a few dashes of clove. I lightly roast my spices stovetop in a skillet before adding to the Frontier berbere. Leftovers are stored in an air tight plastic container in my freezer. Take a chance and play around a bit with your spices (small samplings) until you create the exact taste for you and your family. Another key to great homemade Ethiopian meals is using niter kibbeh (spiced butter). All of the essential ingredients for making a great niter kibbeh are available here at Amazon (Brundo Market Store), on Etsy and Ebay. Enjoy...Made my Doro Wat taste like Vindaloo! Heavy on the cumin. Not the bebere I'm used to, yet that is probably a personal preference. It's spice profile may be exactly what others want. The product is sustainably sourced, all natural, no chemicals. I love that fact. I love the company's philosophy. It's not the Berbere I get from my local Ethiopian restaurant - From what I'm told, berbere is like Italian tomatoe sauce - everyone's taste different. Some tomato sauces are heavy on oregano, some light. So, simply ordering tomato sauce doesn't tell you the spice profile... If you like berbere with cumin (maybe cinnamon, too?) then this is for you. It's got a sweetness to it that I do not prefer. Yet I like the company motto and will buy other spices from them. UPDATE: Many 1 star reviews say the same thing... not authentic berbere. One even says heavy on cumin and cinnamon. Definitely too heavy on cinnamon and cumin, and not berbere at all. Be warned. If you want berbere, this is not it. It is in interesting spice mix, but not Ethiopian, and not berbere.I'm not Ethiopian, not even African, but I do love me some fiery doro wat (If you don't know, Google it, it's a life changer) And if you want true doro wat without trying to hunt down obscure spices, this will do you right fine.Chicken, berbere seasoning, hard boiled eggs, time and a few common other ingredients, you have Ethiopia's national dish right in your own home. Use on scrambled eggs for a wake up you'll not forget (just a bit is all that's needed) Only thing needed is Ethiopian flatbread (Yes, Amazon can supply you with that or the correct flour for making it) and company to enjoy it.The flavor is out of this world spectacular. If wars could be won by cooking, European colonizers would be speaking Ethiopian. Yeah, buy this, experiment, you wont regret it unless spicy isn't your cup of tea.I L-O-V-E Ethiopian food, but don't live anywhere near an Ethiopian restaurant. Berbere seasoning to the rescue! Frontier is my go-to for clean, organic spices and Berbere doesn't disappoint. I can make Ethiopian food at home while hoping that their food finally makes it into grocery stores.FIRST TIME BUYING FROM THIS COMPAY. I WILL USE HALF OF WHAT I HAVE USED BEFORE AS IT IS SUPER HOT.
